In this sketch for Pink Angels, De kooning used Organic forms of flat beaten re-fragmented and added characters, with which he reacted to European Surrealism.
The New York School of the forties was very influenced by members of the Surrealistic movement like Max Ernst and Yves Tanguy, among others who fled the Nazi regime and emigrated to the US.
